Long Island Beer Fest - May 12th
Organized by Shoreline Beverage, perhaps the best beer distributor on the Island, the 1st Annual Long Island Beer Fest at the Huntington Hilton is sure to be an exercise in excess. With over fifty different craft beers available for tasting and a group of some the Island's restaurants providing food there will be plenty of overindulging taking place and plenty of mess.
Not only will the festival provide food and drink to wet the palette it will also wet the synapses in your brain. Featured guest's Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery fame and Phil Markowski, brewmaster/author, will be guest speakers, that is if the festival guests can break their attention away from the amazing variety of beer being showcased. There are some excellent brews being offered up. To name a few; Sixpoint Craft Ales, Goose Island, Victory Brewery, Grimbergen, Smuttynose and two representatives from Long Island; Southampton and Blue Point.
The one brewer that I anticipate the most is Sixpoint. I attended a festival in Boston in early February and tried their Imperial Red and thought it top rate. I also chatted up one of the brewers about one of their original brews, the Bengali Tiger. Nice guys, always looking to talk about beer, promoting beer enjoyment, and always willing to experiment with new brewing concepts. Plus they hail from Brooklyn. I just hope they bring some Imperial Red with them, that was great stuff.
Another brewer that I am looking forward to is Blue Point Brewing Company. Coming out of Patchogue, Long Island, these home town boys made perhaps my favorite beer of summer 2005, Hoptical Illusion. The Illusion is a traditional America style IPA with enough hop character to blow your face off, whew this is some good stuff. Most likely they will have the Illusion available and perhaps some of their more ambitious fruit flavored brews, like the Blueberry Malt.
Victory Brewing has some great brews, most notably their pilsner, Prima, which is a breathtakingly dry summertime thirst quencher that is dear to my heart. They will most undoubtedly be sharing their spring and summer seasonals like the Sunrise Weissbier, Throwback, and Whirlwind Wit.
Also at the Beer Advocate Extreme Beer Fest in Boston this past February was Smuttynose Brewing Co. Famous for their barleywine, I tried some of their new offerings in February and found them to be quite interesting. Look for the Smuttynose IPA and their newest release, the Summer Weizen.
The festival location is "conveniently" located off the Long Island Expressway, on Route 110. I say this pensively because I may be forced to drive and have not worked out the logistics of where I will stay. Either in the Hilton or at a friends place, but be assured I will not be driving home afterwards. I hope to shoot my gab with some real deal brewers and people involved in the industry, without making a fool of myself.
